A guided visit to Old St. Canice's Church & Graveyard

10th Jun 2024
The three 6th classes have been learning about our local history here in Finglas.
We have been learning about the origins of Finglas village over 1,000 years ago through St. Canice and his monastic religious community.
Last week, we had 2 guest speakers from Dublin City Council and from Abarta Heritage visit us in our school to explain this local history. Today we were brought on a guided visit to the oldest part of the settlement of Finglas - the original St. Canice's Church & Graveyard.
We saw the Nethercross, which is the only high cross in all of Dublin & dates back 1,000 years!!
We also learned about the different types of graves, about the conservation work at the site and we all took part in investigating local history through the information on some of the headstones.
As part of the conservation project for Old St. Canice's Church & Graveyard, some girls were recorded for a podcast.
It was a very interesting afternoon as none of us had ever been there before!
We realise the importance of the site and the need to conserve it for the future.
