Term 1 - The Beginning of the End -
Hi everyone, my name is Maisy McGrath and welcome to our class blog. In it I’m going to tell you all about what we have done from September to December.
Coming back to school, most people were excited to see their friends again and a little bit nervous about having a new teacher – our last one ever in St. Canice’s GNS! Luckily this year, things are back to normal with the sixth-class girls allowed to do jobs such as mind the infants during break times which everyone loves to do.
During September we looked at different aspects of the United States of America. We looked at some of the major cities in the USA as well as the terrible events that happened during 9/11. We also studied the life of one of America’s most famous people, Martin Luther King. We looked at the unfair ways in which black people were treated in America and how Martin Luther King became a leader in their fight for equal rights.
We also started an eight-week running course in September called Marathon Kids. The aim of the programme was to build up our running over the weeks. The total amount of distance ran equalled a marathon. To be honest, it started off great with everyone enthusiastic but as the weeks kept going, it became harder and harder to get those energy levels up! We all got medals and a T shirt at the end which was good!
The big topic we’ve studied this term has been World War Two. It is a huge topic, but our teacher broke it down into different categories. We looked at Blitzkrieg, The Invasion of Poland, The Battle of Dunkirk, Operation Barbarossa, D-Day as well as the horrible events that happened at concentration camps such as Auschwitz. Just last week we did projects on a topic of WWII and presented them to Susan and Mr. Brennan. I did mine on Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun.
In English we read the book ‘The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas’ a story about two boys, born on the same day that lead two totally different lives. It divided people’s opinion in the class with some enjoying and others not!
In the middle of all of that we also had Science Week where we built chains using only a single A4 piece of paper – Lacey M and Alicia won that contest. We also looked at what happens when vinegar and bicarbonate of soda mix. We were able to blow up a balloon with the gas created. Another experiment we did was investigating the effects that oxygen has on fire! That was a fun week!
There is fun daily in class when we play wordle, heardle and facedle while having lunch. I don’t think there has been a day where we haven’t gotten the word. The songs and faces can be tricky though!
One of the most important things we’ve started this year is our preparation for Confirmation. We’ve been writing in our confirmation copies all about the different sacraments of the church. We’ve been saying our prayers daily. We’re all really excited for our big day which is on March 23rd 2023.
That’s it for now, thanks for reading,
Maisy.
